THE LOWDOWN
ATALANTA
Gian Piero Gasperini has been coaching an Atalanta side in transition for the last 12 to 18 months or so but the Bergamasci appear to have finally hit their stride as they seek to tighten their grip on a top four spot and UEFA Champions League qualification after yet another win, hammering Genoa by four goals to one, last weekend.
That victory means that Atalanta have now enjoyed five successive victories across all competitions, establishing themselves in the top four and reaching the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia in the process, too. They have scored a combined total of 16 goals in those five games, too, as Gasperini gets his team to click into gear.
SASSUOLO
Alessio Dionisi just about remains in charge of Sassuolo but the former Empoli boss is coming under major pressure as they begin the 25th match day of the 2023/24 Serie A campaign sitting just a point and a place outside of the bottom three and the relegation places after sharing a 1-1 draw with Torino last weekend.
They have managed just five victories with five draws and 13 defeats in their 23 matches so far this season but there has been a general lack of effectiveness in Dionisi’s team that has them genuinely involved in the Serie A relegation battle when they entered the campaign expecting to challenge for a top-half finish.
THE TEAM NEWS
ATALANTA
Atalanta only have a couple of defensive injury issues for this weekend with both Jose Luis Palomino and Isak Hien set to be unavailable as a result.
PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Carnesecchi; Scalvini, Djimsiti, Kolasinac; Holm, de Roon, Pasalic, Ruggeri; Koopmeiners, De Ketelaere; Scamacca
UNAVAILABLE: Palomino (Injured), Hien (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE:
SASSUOLO
Key attacker Domenico Berardi will be sidelined for this weekend due to injury, alongside former West Ham United midfielder Pedro Obiang.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Consigli; Pedersen, Erlic, Viti, Doig; Henrique, Lipani; Bajrami, Thorstvedt, Lauriente; Pinamonti
UNAVAILABLE: Berardi (Injured), Obiang (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Toljan (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
There is a real mis-match between two teams truly going in opposite directions. Atalanta have a settled and well balanced side that have really begun to click in the favoured 3-4-2-1 system of Gasperini. Sassuolo could well be heading down into Serie B this season and they are now even missing their key attacking spark in Domenico Berardi. A comfortable Atalanta victory is to be expected on Saturday, especially with their home advantage.
TIP: ATALANTA TO WIN -1 HANDICAP
