THE LOWDOWN

WERDER BREMEN

Werder Bremen gained another three precious points on the road, this time away at Mainz to take them above Heidenheim in the Bundesliga table. Once again, Werder’s win was by a single goal and it was an extremely early one, scored in just the second minute by Marvin Ducksch. Mainz knocked at the door but couldn’t break the visitors down.

That victory was the third in succession for Werder, two away from home by a goal to nil and the other a 3-1 triumph at home to Freiburg. Their current unbeaten run now stands at seven games with four wins and three draws, even more impressive when considering the likes of Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig made up two of their opponents.

HEIDENHEIM

Heidenheim’s outstanding unbeaten run goes on, although it is now four draws on the bounce for Frank Schmidt’s side. Once again, they managed to get a hard-earned draw against Borussia Dortmund, this time by holding them to a 0-0 draw. To gain two points and remain unbeaten against such a strong opponent across the season is a testament as to their success so far in the Bundesliga.

Again, change is unlikely within the Heidenheim starting XI as Schmidt should stick to what is already a working formula. Werder Bremen will test the resolve of the Heidenheim backline, but this is something they are no doubt used to and having not conceded more than one goal across each of their last four games, confidence among the visiting defence will be high.

THE PREDICTION

When considering how they shut out Borussia Dortmund, Werder Bremen will know the task they have ahead of them to break down this well-drilled, hard-working Heidenheim unit. The visitors are likely to prioritise bodies behind the ball and a solid defensive setup with an eye on hitting Werder on the counter-attack. The hosts will no doubt be aware of that Heidenheim threat at the other end of the pitch and should show caution when required. With this in mind, back under 2.5 goals to be scored for what would be the fifth straight fixture involving Heidenheim.

TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
