THE LOWDOWN
UNION BERLIN
Union Berlin have won just once in their last five Bundesliga fixtures and following FC Cologne’s victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the most recent round of league fixtures, the gap between Union and 16th-place has been cut to three points, further underlining the importance of the resul here from the hosts’ perspective.
Suspensions to Haberer, Trimmel and Vogt weakens them this weekend, whilst Volland and Hollerbach are expected to continue together up top. Robin Gosens is likely to get the nod once again over Jerome Rousillon on the left-hand-side but Josip Juranovic will be missing on the opposite flank because of an injury.
WOLFSBURG
Wolfsburg’s sequence of draws continued last weekend as their game against Hoffenheim ended 2-2 with Niko Kovac’s side forced to come from behind twice to salvage a point. That was the fourth Wolfsburg game in a row which has ended level and whilst they are yet to suffer defeat post-winter break, they are also yet to taste victory.
Most notable from the Wolfsburg team’s perspective is striker Kevin Behrens returning to his former club after a two-and-a-half-year spell in the German capital. First-choice goalkeeper Koen Casteels is missing due to a big problem, so Pavao Pervan is expected to deputise between the sticks for Wolfsburg.
THE TEAM NEWS
UNION BERLIN
PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Ronnow; Doekhi, Knoche, Leite; Laidouni, Tousart, Khedira, Schafer, Gosens; Volland, Hollerbach
UNAVAILABLE: Haberer (Suspended), Juranovic (Injured), Trimmel (Suspended), Vogt (Suspended)
QUESTIONABLE:
WOLFSBURG
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Pervan; Maehle, Lacroix, Jenz, Rogerio; Svanberg, Arnold; Majer, Wind, Kaminski; Behrens
UNAVAILABLE: Casteels (Injured), Nmecha (Injured), Tomas (Injured), Wimmer (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Vranckx (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
Neither of these two sides have proved accustomed to winning football matches and that could be reflected in this affair, which is likely to be low in quality and possibly short of clear-cut opportunities, despite the best efforts of Behrens for one against his former club. In the end, it would be no surprise if neither team do enough to win this one, so consider backing a draw.
TIP: DRAW
