THE LOWDOWN
MAINZ
It took less than a minute for things to start going wrong for Mainz away at Union Berlin as they immediately went behind. They were two down before ten minutes had passed and the game was effectively over as a contest, not the start to the campaign Bo Svensson would have wanted to say the least.
Although Mainz did pull a goal back through Anthony Caci, the damage had long been done and Mainz ultimately ended up beaten by four goals to one, putting them inside the bottom three on goal difference.
EINTRACHT FRANKFURT
Eintracht Frankfurt weren’t overly convincing last Sunday in Dino Toppmoller’s first game as head coach. All they’ll care about though is that they got the job done, beating Darmstadt by a goal to nil, star forward Randal Kolo Muani the goalscorer as speculation over the French international’s future continues.
Kolo Muani was on the scoresheet again in midweek. However, Eintracht were afforded less joy in the first leg of their Europa Conference League qualification play-off, drawing 1-1 away at Levski Sofia after conceding in the fifth minute of injury time.
THE TEAM NEWS
MAINZ
Centre-back Andreas Hanche-Olsen missed Mainz’s trip to German capital through injury, but the Norwegian is edging closer to a return and may well be passed fit in time to play his first league game of the season against Eintracht.
PREDICTED XI (3-4-3): Zentner; Bell, Hanche-Olsen, Fernandes; Da Costa, Krauss, Barreiro, Caci; Onisiwo, Ajorque, Richter
UNAVAILABLE:
QUESTIONABLE: Hanche Olsen (Injured)
EINTRACHT FRANKFURT
After coming off against Darmstadt with a knock, midfielder Sebastian Rode is expected to miss out after not featuring in Sofia. Lucas Alario remains out with a knee injury and illness could sideline both Makoto Hasebe and Hugo Larsson.
PREDICTED XI (3-4-3): Trapp; Koch, Tuta, Pacho; Buta, Ebimbe, Skhiri, Max; Lindstrom, Kolo Muani, Gotze
UNAVAILABLE: Alario (Injured), Loune (Injured), Rode (Injured),
QUESTIONABLE: Hasabe (Illness), Larsson (Illness)
THE PREDICTION
Expect a positive response for Mainz on their home ground as they look to prove a point following a disappointing start, albeit against a strong Union side. They may well be afforded more success here with Eintracht Frankfurt not at their best so far this season from an offensive perspective and the visitors could be frustrated over the course of this encounter. Factor in potential fatigue following a European away trip in midweek and Mainz will be confident of getting something out of this one. Consider backing a draw at MEWA Arena.
