THE LOWDOWN

BAYERN MUNICH

Bayern Munich may have been beaten in the DFL-Supercup, but they’ve hit the ground running in the Bundesliga, putting four past Werder Bremen on the opening night of the 2023-24 campaign. It took record signing Harry Kane just a few minutes to make his mark on his first start for the club, setting up Leroy Sane for the opening goal, before Kane scored himself in the second half.

Sane went on to double up, finishing a beautiful team move, before substitute Mathys Tel added a fourth to complete the rout. Thomas Tuchel’s champions come into this latest round of fixtures with only Stuttgart above them in the table.

AUGSBURG

Augsburg more than played their part in the most exciting fixture of the opening round, drawing 4-4 at home to Borussia Monchengladbach in a brilliant, yet bonkers encounter. Important to note from Augsburg’s perspective was that they trailed 1-3 at one stage and showed excellent resilience to make it 3-3 before half-time.

Incredibly, Augsburg could have won it and completed the most remarkable of come-backs after taking the lead for the first time through Ruben Vargas with just under 15 minutes of normal time remaining. However, their hearts were broken in the seventh minute of stoppage time as Gladbach stole a point from the penalty spot.

THE TEAM NEWS

BAYERN MUNICH

Jamal Musiala is set to miss the next few weeks after suffering a hamstring injury, paving the way for Thomas Muller’s return to the Bayern starting line-up. Muller will play just behind central striker Kane and look to establish a partnership with the England captain similar to the one he had with Robert Lewandowski.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Ulreich; Mazraoui, Kim, Upamecano, Davies; Goretzka, Kimmich; Sane, Muller, Coman; Kane

UNAVAILABLE: Neuer (Injured), Guerreiro (Injured), Musiala (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Sarr (Injured)

AUGSBURG

Both Ruben Vargas and Robert Gumny have been suffering from illness and face a race against time to prove their fitness for this game. Patric Pfeiffer remains suspended, whilst both Raphael Framberger and Mayasa Okugawa are out injured.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Dahmen; Engels, Bauer, Uduokhai, Pedersen; Maier, Rexhbecaj, Dorsch, Demirovic; Berisha, Michel

UNAVAILABLE: Framberger (Injured), Gouweleeuw (Fitness), Pfeiffer (Suspended), Oxford (Illness), Okugawa (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Gumny (Illness), Vargas (Illness)

THE PREDICTION

As expected, the addition of Kane as a focal point in attack has added a key dimension to Bayern’s game that was missing throughout most of last season and certainly in their defeat to RB Leipzig two weeks ago. The ‘Rekordmeiser’ look back to their formidable best going forward and it’s hard to see Augsburg being able to contain them, especially when taking into account their defending last weekend. Expect Bayern Munich to make it six points from six and triumph by at least two clear goals.

TIP: BAYERN MUNICH TO WIN WITH -1 HANDICAP
