STRASBOURG
Over the summer, Strasbourg, a famous and storied French club, were bought out by Todd Boehly’s investment group and, as a result, they aren’t quite, but basically are, a satellite club for Premier League Chelsea. Whilst that may demean and undermine such a historic club, it does give them added financial strength to compete towards the top end of a weak Ligue 1 table.
They have appointed Patrick Vieira over the summer and added the likes of Angelo Gabriel, on loan from Chelsea, as well as Abakar Sylla from Club Brugge. They began the season with an unconvincing 2-1 win at home to Lyon before being swept aside by three goals to nil against Monaco in the principality of Monaco last weekend, in their most recent outing.
TOULOUSE
Following promotion back to the top-flight in 2022, the smartly run and organised outfit of Toulouse enjoyed an impressive 2022/23 campaign, earning a comfortable mid-table spot but, primarily, going on to win the Coupe de France and, as a consequence, qualifying for the group stages of the UEFA Europa League.
They have started the 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign with four points from their opening two matches, beginning the season with a 2-1 win against Nantes, who they defeated in the aforementioned cup final last season. Since then they held reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain to a 1-1 draw with Zakaria Aboukhlal scoring an 87th minute equaliser from the penalty spot.

Both of these teams will be expecting to be upwardly mobile this season and pushing into the top-half of the table, even maybe challenging as outsiders for the European spots – Toulouse are already in Europe for this season by virtue of last year’s Coupe de France victory. The two teams were victorious on the opening day but had very different outcomes last weekend. They will both remain an entertaining watch throughout the campaign and by virtue of that, both teams scoring seems a good bet for this opening day clash.
