With INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe pouring money into Nice over recent years with some genuinely bizarre and failed recruitment, Nice have cut back this summer after missing out on European qualification once again last season. The southern club are still expected to maintain a push towards the top six this season, albeit they have taken a risk with the appointment of Francesco Farioli.
Farioli’s reign at the Allianz Riviera has started with modest results but half-decent performances, drawing all three of their games so far this season. They began with a respectable 1-1 draw against Lille then followed that up with another respectable 1-1 draw, this time against Lorient, before then sharing an on paper respectable goalless draw with Lyon but Lyon are in complete disarray at the moment.
STRASBOURG
Over the summer, Strasbourg became the latest member of the Clearlake Capital group. Whilst this has meant financial positives and new signings such as Angelo Gabriel and Abakar Sylla, it does also mean they are essentially the feeder club to Premier League side Chelsea. They will be aiming for a top-half finish and even eyeing up a return to European football this time around.
They appointed former Crystal Palace and Nice manager Patrick Vieira ahead of the 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign and started the season with a 2-1 win at home to Olympique Lyonnais in which they were the weaker side. They followed that up with a 3-0 hammering at the hands of Monaco before comfortably defeating Toulouse by two goals to nil in their most recent outing, last weekend.

These are two sides with ambitious off-field projects but those ambitious off-field projects have the potential to lack a little bit of organisation. INEOS have handled the wealth at their disposal quite poorly with Nice and the Riviera club have very much underperformed their general expectations. Strasbourg’s ownership is new but the owners have made a bit of a mess, at least on the face of it, at Chelsea. However, on the pitch, the visitors are showing some cohesion mixed with fortune so even backing them there is risky. Both lack a little bit of fluency and a low-scoring encounter in the heat seems likely.
