THE LOWDOWN

NICE

Nice finished in mid-table last season but have made a couple of interesting additions to their squad which could see them climb up a few spots and compete for a European place.

Didier Digard had them playing some good football during his tenure, taking over from Lucien Favre in January and leading them on an eight-game unbeaten run but he has been replaced by Francesco Farioli who will hope to carry on where his predecessor left off.

LILLE

Lille managed to sneak their way into fifth place last season, capitalising on Monaco’s late-season woes to land the final European spot on offer via the league standings.

Ironically, Paulo Fonseca was one of the names linked with the Nice job over the summer but has remained in the hot seat at Lille and will be eager to build on last season’s efforts. They have retained the crux of the squad from last year with Timothy Weah the only major exit but they have made some strong signings with Samuel Umtiti hoping to revive his career back in France.

THE TEAM NEWS

NICE

Terem Moffi has joined after a successful loan spell last season and should be deployed in the lone striker role for this contest. In a further addition to the forward line, Jeremie Boga has arrived from Atalanta while Morgan Sanson has signed on a free transfer from Aston Villa.

An additional boost for Nice comes in the form of Khephren Thuram remaining at the club, for the time being at least. The French international looked set to depart over the summer having been linked with several Premier League teams but a move has not materialised as yet.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Bulka; Atla, Todibo, Dante, Bard; Ndayishimiye, Sanson, Thuram; Laborde, Moffi, Boga

LILLE

Lille are likely to have Jonathan David leading the line in what could well be his final season at the club. The Canadian has plenty of suitors across Europe and could well secure a big-money move if he gets close to his tally of 24 Ligue 1 goals that he achieved last term.

New signings Hakon Haraldsson and Tiago Santos look set to start having arrived in the summer.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Chevalier; Santos, Gudmundsson, Umtiti, Ismaily; Andre, Baleba; Gomes, Cabella, Haraldsson; David

UNAVAILABLE: Tiago Djalo (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Home advantage could be crucial in this first Ligue 1 matchup of the season. Nice were tough to beat on home soil last season, losing just two of their last 15 league games at Allianz Riviera. On the other hand, Lille struggled on the road and won just two of their last 11 on their travels in Ligue 1. They failed to win any of their last five away from home to wrap last season up and the respective records of the two teams give the home side the edge here.
