Over the summer, after Jean-Michel Aulas was removed as President last season and Lyon transition into the John Textor ownership model, things have got a bit messy with the club and there is supporter unrest at Parc OL. Laurent Blanc has reiterated several times over the summer he has no idea how long he will be in charge and suggested after just their second match of the season that he should be sacked.
Lyon began the 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign with a reasonable performance away to Strasbourg, but they were still beaten by two goals to one. They then followed that up by being hammered by Montpellier Herault at home, losing that encounter 4-1. Last weekend they did share a respectable goalless draw away to Nice but it remains a very poor start to the season.
PSG
It has been another summer of upheaval in the French capital with yet another manager coming in to try and perform what others couldn’t. PSG have seen the departures of both Neymar and Lionel Messi but have retained Kylian Mbappe and also added quite a few attackers such as Lee Kang-in, Ousmane Dembele, Goncalo Ramos and Marco Asensio with both Randal Kolo Muani and Bradley Barcola still linked.
Luis Enrique’s reigning champions began by breaking the record for most passes in a Ligue 1 match but were held to a goalless draw by Lorient. They followed that up with a frustrating 1-1 draw away to Toulouse. However, last weekend, they defeated last season’s second-place side Lens by three goals to one to get their season up and running.

On paper, these two sides aren’t close but any contest between Lyon and PSG should be a competitive and fierce one. Whilst the hosts earned their first point of the season last weekend they are still in the mire and genuinely look hapless on the field, especially going forward without their talisman Alexandre Lacazette. PSG haven’t quite clicked into gear but they have remained dominant in all three of their opening matches and the reigning champions are expected to brutally expose the weaknesses in Lyon’s side.
