THE LOWDOWN
LORIENT
Lorient have established themselves firmly in the middle-of-the-table since they gained promotion back to Ligue 1 a couple of seasons ago. They, under the management of Regis Le Bris, finished tenth last season and will be aiming to push towards the top six and potentially even sneak into the UEFA Europa Conference League spots.
So far this season they have shared two respectable draws against strong opposition. Firstly, they faced reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain at Parc des Princes on the opening day, managing to hold the Parisians to a goalless draw, before earning a point at home to Nice last weekend via a 77th minute equaliser from second-half substitute Sirine Doucoure.
LILLE
Under the management of Paulo Fonseca, Lille’s style of football really developed in the second-half of last season and they were unfortunate to miss out on a top four finish, having to settle for UEFA Europa Conference League qualification. They come into this on the back of a very underwhelming 2-1 last gasp victory at home to Rijeka in the first-leg of their playoff tie in that competition during the week.
The northern club have started the 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign with a couple of pretty frustrating performances as they seek to find the rhythm and fluency from the back end of last season. They began with a 1-1 draw away to Nice in which they were 1-0 down until deep into second-half stoppage-time but then did manage a 2-0 win at home to a poor Nantes side last weekend.

Regis Le Bris has to deal with several injures players with five first-teamers out of the side but they should still be able to name an unchanged eleven from last weekend’s team.

We could well be set for quite an entertaining encounter in Lorient this weekend. The home team will be seeking to take advantage of any potentially tired legs or distracted minds in their opposition, with Lille potentially beginning to focus on ensuring UEFA Europa Conference League group stage qualification. Lorient have begun with two relatively reasonable draws against Nice and PSG, whilst Lille have collected four points. Both sides haven’t quite had their cutting edge yet this season and a low-scoring encounter, therefore, seems likely.
