THE LOWDOWN

CLERMONT

Pascal Gastien remains in charge of Clermont, despite the fact that they have spent the majority of this season sitting in the bottom two and the automatic relegation places. However, they have given themselves a bit of a life-line after Jim Allevinah scored an 89th minute winner away to ten-man Nantes a couple of weeks ago to win by two goals to one.

Since then, Clermont have been comfortably defeated by three goals to one by Patrick Vieira’s improving Strasbourg in the Round of 32 of the Coupe de France. They have managed just three victories in 18 matches so far this season in Ligue 1 and they are the lowest scorers in the division, too, with just 13 goals scored.

STRASBOURG

After their takeover in the summer, Strasbourg appointed former Nice and Crystal Palace manager, Patrick Vieira. The Alsace-based club began extremely slowly but have been much-improved in the last month and a half or so as they move into the top-half of the table ahead of this weekend’s round of fixtures.

The visitors come into this one on the back of a comfortable 3-1 defeat of Clermont in their most recent outing, last weekend. Strasbourg are now unbeaten in their last seven matches across all competitions with six victories, six draws and six defeats in their 18 matches in Ligue 1 so far this season.

THE PREDICTION

These are two sides that are likely to have very different seasons in the second-half of the campaign. Clermont are set for a relegation battle throughout the latter stages of this year, despite their much-needed victory over Nantes a couple of weeks ago. They now face a Strasbourg side that were beginning to turn performances around in the autumn but have now strung a serious set of results together and another Strasbourg victory would appear the likeliest outcome for this one.

TIP: STRASBOURG TO WIN
