THE LOWDOWN

GENT

Hein Vanhaezebrouck led Gent to a top eight finish last season but they were expecting to finish in the top four until they slipped towards the top end of the season. They are looking to be improved upon their UEFA Europa Conference League playoff finish last year and it will be pivotal that they hold on to the likes of Gift Orban and Hugo Cuypers in the remaining weeks of this transfer window in order to do so.

The home team come into this on the back of a 2-1 defeat away to Pogon Szczecin in the second-leg of their UEFA Europa Conference League third qualifying round tie. They had won the first-leg by five goals to nil so Vanhaezebrouck decided to rest several players, including the aforementioned Cuypers and their captain, Sven Kums.

SINT-TRUIDEN

Sint-Truiden will be one of the sides that are worried about the 2023/24 Jupiler Pro League being reduced from 18 to 16 teams as that will naturally cause the bottom end of the table to become more congested and competitive, potentially leading so some sides that view themselves as mid-table furniture being dragged down towards the bottom end.

The visitors come into this on the back of a positive start to the campaign, though. In their opening three matches of the season, they have managed two victories with one defeat. That one defeat came against an impressive Anderlecht side after STVV had begun with back-to-back 1-0 victories against Standard Liege and then Kortrijk.

THE TEAM NEWS

GENT

Given that Gent made a couple of changes in midweek for their UEFA Europa Conference League tie, they will return to their strongest possible side for the Belgian Jupiler Pro League, albeit they are still set to be without Laurent Depoitre due to injury.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Nardi; Kandouss, Watanabe, Torunarigha; Samoise, De Sart, Kums, Hong; Hjulsager, Orban; Cuypers

SINT-TRUIDEN

Thorsten Fink will be keen to keep some consistency in his selection, especially after STVV’s impressive start to the season. With no injuries or suspensions, an unchanged eleven is expected for this weekend.

THE PREDICTION

Gent have not only been in good form but they are also getting results and playing in an entertaining manner to go with it. In their seven matches across all competitions so far this season, there has been a combined total of 31 goals. Both teams have scored in five of those seven games, too, with Gent winning all three of their league matches so far. STVV have started well but it could be argued they have been fortunate to hold on to two 1-0 wins against struggling opposition so another high-scoring victory for the hosts seems the likeliest outcome.

TIP: GENT TO WIN & OVER 2.5 GOALS
