Flavio Cobolli headed into Hamburg as the defending champion, but he was an early casualty at the event, losing in the first-round to Ignacio Buse. The Peruvian would go on to win the tournament and succeed Cobolli as the new champion. The Italian has still shown his quality during this European clay swing, beating Daniil Medvedev on his way to a quarter-final appearance in Madrid, and also making it through to the final of the BMW Open in April after getting past Alexander Zverev in the last four. His inconsistency returned at his home event however, as he lost in round three.
He faces a fellow countryman in the first-round as he plays Andrea Pellegrino. The 29-year-old competed in the main draw of a Masters 1000 event for the first time in Rome and fared brilliantly as he won three matches in a row to progress to the round-of-16, where he would lose to Jannik Sinner. His ranking has now risen to inside the top 130, and he managed to qualify after dropping just one set across his three matches.
Cobolli is a clear favourite, but his level can fluctuate and Pellegrini will make him work hard for victory.
