Flavio Cobolli overcame Francisco Comesana in three sets to advance into the second-round of the Monte-Carlo Masters. He recovered from going a break down at the start of the first set as he took the lead, but his level dropped as Comesana won five games in a row at one point to level the match. Cobolli raced ahead in the decider to win 7-5 2-6 6-3 after two hours and 30 minutes.
He faces Alexander Blockx next. The young Belgian defeated Denis Shapovalov to set up a meeting with Cobolli. The 20-year-old crucially broke in the fourth game of the third set and held his nerve to win 6-4 4-6 6-3.
It’s been an up and down season for Cobolli so far. He showed his quality in Acapulco as he won the Mexican Open title, but he has also suffered a number of early exits from tournaments against lower ranked opponents. He is prone to lapses, and Blockx may be worth a set in this match, though the Italian is still a firm favourite.
