Fiona Ferro defeated Danka Kovinic in the first-round of the Morocco Open. Ferro was still broken on three occasions, but she continued to create opportunities on her opponent’s serve as she won 6-2 6-3. She now takes on Jessica Bouzas Maneiro for a place in the quarter-finals.
Bouzas Maneiro got past Lisa Zaar in straight sets. The Spaniard stormed ahead in the first set, not even losing a game as she took control of the contest. She looked on course for a quick win as she went 5-1 up in the second, but her level dropped as Zaar won four games in a row to draw level. The 23-year-old regrouped to win 6-0 7-5. She’s a victory away from a second successive quarter-final at this tournament.
They have played once before, in the qualifying rounds of Roland Garros three years ago, with Ferro winning in three sets. She can be a competitive player on clay, but Bouzas Maneiro will start as a firm favourite.
