Felix Auger-Aliassime suffered another early exit in Hamburg as he was beaten in the round-of-16 by Aleksandar Kovacevic. The Canadian, who was the top seed, was a break up in the deciding set but went on to lose. He also lost his opening match in Rome to Mariano Navone. Auger-Aliassime began his clay court season with a quarter-final appearance in Monte-Carlo, his best showing at the event, but his results have taken a slide since then.
Daniel Altmaier is his first-round opponent. The German made a really poor start to the year but has been able to post his best results of the season during the European clay swing, with quarter-finals in Bucharest and Hamburg. He performed well at the latter event, coming from a set down to beat Ben Shelton, his best win of the year by quite some distance.
The head-to-head is locked at 2-2 and 1-1 on clay. Altmaier can be a tough player on clay for higher-ranked opponents and Auger-Aliassime will be tested in his first-round match. Nevertheless, he’s still a firm favourite.
