Felix Auger-Aliassime made it four straight wins against Marin Cilic as he reached the round-of-16 stage of the Monte-Carlo Masters for the first time with a straight sets win. The pair exchanged breaks in the first set, with Auger-Aliassime failing to serve it out, but he would still go in front after winning the tiebreak. The second was more straight-forward as he claimed a 7-6 (4) 6-3 victory.
He now faces Casper Ruud. The Norwegian and three-time Grand Slam finalist beat Corentin Moutet in straight sets. Ruud was a break down in the first set but wrestled the momentum back in his favour and went on to win 7-5 6-3.
Auger-Aliassime leads the head-to-head 4-3 and 2-1 on clay, while he has also won the last three meetings between the pair. Both players were not at their best in the previous round but managed to pull through. Auger-Aliassime does not have a strong record at this event, but Ruud did look vulnerable at times against Moutet and will need to improve if he is to advance further in Monte-Carlo.
