Felix Auger-Aliassime defeated Vit Kopriva in the first-round of the Hamburg Open. The Canadian, who is the top seed at the event, broke late in the first set and raced clear in the second as he claimed a 7-5 6-1 victory. He is now one match away from a second quarter-final appearance on the surface this season, having progressed to the last eight of the Monte-Carlo Masters in April.
He now takes on Aleksandar Kovacevic. The lucky loser defeated Arthur Gea in round one. Kovacevic comfortably took the lead and he held his nerve in the second set tiebreak to win 6-2 7-6 (3).
Auger-Aliassime leads the head-to-head 2-0, but this is their first match against each other on clay. They last played in the final of the Open Occitanie in Montpellier last year, with Auger-Aliassime winning in three sets. The 25-year-old is not at his strongest on this surface, but his all-round game is still impressive enough to get the job done.
