Fabian Marozsan enjoyed a dominant win in his first-round match at the Monte-Carlo Masters as he thrashed Damir Dzumhur in straight sets. The Hungarian did not concede a break point as he wrapped up a 6-1 6-2 win after one hour and five minutes. Marozsan reached the semi-finals of the Grand Prix Hassan II last week but fell to a surprising loss to Daniel Merida Aguilar.
He now faces Hubert Hurkacz. The Pole ended a seven-match losing run as he defeated Luciano Darderi in three sets. Hurkacz was pegged back in the first set after going 3-0 up, but he still went ahead after winning the tiebreak. Despite Darderi forcing a decider, Hurkacz outlasted the Italian to win 7-6 (4) 5-7 6-1.
That win will have boosted Hurkacz’s confidence, but Marozsan is likely to be a tough opponent in the second-round. He is a stylish player on clay, and the slower conditions allow him to fully utilise his variety and disrupt opponents with his mix of spin and shot selection.
