Eva Lys breezed through her first-round match in Beijing as she thrashed Ruien Zhang. Zhang, just 17, was making her WTA Tour debut but Lys offered no mercy as she dominated the whole match to win 6-1 6-0 in just 54 minutes.
She will now go up against Iva Jovic in round two. The American youngster is set to compete in her first tournament since winning the first WTA title of her career in Guadalajara earlier in the month. She is now inside the top 40 of the world rankings for the first time and is the 17-year-old is continuing to go from strength to strength.
Lys is a fine player on this surface but it’s difficult to look past Jovic, who will want to carry the momentum on from her first title. This is one of the closer round two matches in Beijing, but the American deserves her status as the favourite for this one.
