Eva Lys pulled off a remarkable comeback in the first-round to defeat former world number two Paula Badosa at the Stuttgart Open. Badosa comfortably took the first set and the match looked to be over after the Spaniard opened up a 4-1 lead in the second. However, Lys fought back with some strong groundstrokes, winning six of the next seven games to level it up. The pair exchanged breaks in the decider, but the German would come out on top to win 2-6 7-5 6-4.
She now takes on fourth seed Elina Svitolina in the round-of-16. Svitolina was in Billie Jean King Cup action for Ukraine last week, easily beating Katarzyna Kawa in her singles match. It’s been a really strong campaign for Svitolina so far, with 21 victories from 26 matches. She has won a title in Auckland, reached a final in Dubai and got through to the semi-finals of the Australian Open and Indian Wells.
Lys enjoyed a fine victory in round one, but she cannot afford another slow start against a player of Svitolina’s quality.
