Emma Navarro showed all her fighting qualities in her singles match against Yutin Putinsteva of Kazakhstan in the quarter-finals of the Billie Jean King Cup. The American saved two match points in the deciding set tiebreak to win 7-5 2-6 7-6 and help the USA advance through to the semi-finals.
She will now face Sonay Kartal of Great Britain in the opening singles match of the semi-final. Kartal also played a vital role in the quarters as she got Britain off to a winning start with victory in the singles against Ena Shibahara. The world number 82, who reached the fourth-round at Wimbledon, made a fast start and won 6-3 7-6. That was Kartal’s first win in four matches.
Kartal is a tenacious competitor, but Navarro does have the more consistent game and greater pedigree. The world number 18 will be a huge favourite to get the USA off to a winning start.
