The 17-year-old is deemed as a promising player for the future and just reached the quarter-finals of a 125 event in Austin, having had to qualify for the event. Jones beat three players in total, including Donna Vekic, and took 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu to three sets, before succumbing in the decider.
She faces Linda Fruhvirtova in round one. The Czech qualified after wins over Madison Brengle and Varvara Lepchenko. Her best result of the season so far was a quarter-final appearance in Ostrava. Fruhvirtova was once ranked inside the top 50, but the 20-year-old is still young enough to reach those heights again.
This should be an interesting match, with Fruhvirtova hoping to be the aggressor from the start and generate a lot of power with her groundstrokes, which should translate well on this fast surface. Nevertheless, Jones is a talent and worth a set here.
