Ella Seidel impressed again as she defeated Magdalena Frech in straight sets to advance at the China Open. She won 82% of her first serve points as she sealed a 7-5 6-4 win. The 20-year-old is inside the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time and got through to the quarters of the Korea Open just last week.
She will face Marta Kostyuk in round two, as the Ukrainian received a bye in the first-round as the 23rd seed. Kostyuk performed well in the Billie Jean King Cup finals as she won both of her singles matches, though Ukraine were still eliminated in the semi-finals by Italy. She went on a six match losing streak during the summer, which included no victory in the grass court season, but Kostyuk has found form again and made the round-of-16 at the US Open. Her WTA 1000 record is also impressive in 2025, with three quarter-finals and three fourth-round finishes.
Seidel is continuing to improve and is a tricky first-round opponent for Kostyuk, but the latter is an efficient hard court player and way ahead in the rankings. A straight sets win in her favour holds strong value.
