Elise Mertens last competed for Belgium at the Billie Jean King Cup, winning her singles match as McCartney Kessler was forced to retire for the United States. The Belgian enjoyed her best run at the Australian Open since 2018 with a run to the fourth-round, but the 30-year-old has been largely ineffectual in terms of reaching the latter stages of other events, with no quarter-final appearances in 2026 yet.
She goes up against Ella Seidel. The German has struggled for form during this campaign, with seven defeats from 12 matches, and she has noticeably regressed in comparison to her overall level last year.
