Elisabetta Cocciaretto lost in the second-round of Madrid to lucky loser Yuliia Starodubtseva 7-6 6-4. The Italian then decided to compete in a Challenger event before her home tournament, defeating Julie Niemeier in the first-round but then falling at the next hurdle to Carlota Martinez Cirez. The Italian struggled with her serve during the match.

Elina Avanesyan has only competed in Madrid in terms of clay court tournaments and fell to an early straight sets defeat to Caroline Dolehide. Avanesyan shone at the beginning of the season where she became the first Armenian to reach a WTA 500 semi-final, but her form has since dried up.

Cocciaretto leads the head-to-head between the pair 2-1, with both of those encounters being on clay. Despite being the lower-ranked player, the Italian will have the home crowd behind her and has the ability to stage an upset and make it through to the second-round.
