Elina Svitolina advanced to the quarter-finals of Indian Wells after her opponent Katerina Siniakova retired from their round-of-16 match. Svitolina took the first set 6-1 and it was 1-1 in the second when Siniakova decided she could not continue. The Ukrainian now has an 18-3 win-loss record so far in 2026.
She faces world number two Iga Swiatek next. The Pole produced one of her best displays of the season as she thrashed Karolina Muchova 6-2 6-0. Muchova had won her last eight matches, having won the title in Doha last month, but Swiatek was in complete control as she won 6-2 6-0 without even facing a break point.
Swiatek leads the head-to-head 4-1 and has won the last three meetings without the drop of a set. Svitolina has made a brilliant start to the campaign and should be able to trouble the six-time Grand Slam champion at times, but Swiatek was close to her best in her last match and will be difficult to stop if she replicates her performance in the previous round.
