It’s been a very strong start to the season for Elina Svitolina, as she has already won a title in Auckland and then made it through to the semi-finals of the Australian Open. The Ukrainian also reached a WTA 1000 final in Dubai, losing to Jessica Pegula. She kept up the consistency at Indian Wells, beating Iga Swiatek on her way to the semi-finals, where she lost to Elena Rybakina. Her win-loss record in 2026 currently stands at 19-4.
She faces Emerson Jones after receiving a bye in the first-round. Jones came through a nail-biting match with Linda Fruhvirtova in round one. Fruhvirtova took the first set and looked set for victory after breaking to go 5-4 up in the second. However, Jones would break back and go on to level the match up in the tiebreak. Despite failing to serve out the match herself in the third, she came through another breaker to win 3-6 7-6 (3) 7-6 (4). That was her first ever win at a Masters event.
Despite Jones’ heroics in the first-round, she is likely to meet her end against an in-form Svitolina.
