Elena-Gabriela Ruse will be hoping for a first win in four matches after another period of poor form for the Romanian. She qualified for the Dubai Tennis Championships but then lost in round one to Emma Navarro, before following that up with losses at Indian Wells and Austin to Ajla Tomljanovic and Paula Badosa respectively.
Antonia Ruzic is her first-round opponent. The Croatian impressed in Dubai as she reached the quarter-finals as a lucky loser, even taking the first set against Elina Svitolina before eventually losing in three. She then pulled off an upset by beating Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng in the second-round of Indian Wells, before a loss to Karolina Muchova. Ruzic began the season slowly but has found form within the past month, and she can cause problems to plenty of players on hard courts.
Ruzic is the player with the more impressive results so far this season and is worth backing here in the first-round.
