Eintracht Frankfurt preview: Replicating highs of last season

The 2024-25 Bundesliga campaign was a brilliant one from an Eintract Frankfurt point of view, Dino Toppmoller’s side securing a third-place finish and a place in next season’s Champions League. This despite losing star forward Omar Marmoush to Man City in the January transfer window. Frankfurt won exactly half of their 34 games over the course of the Bundesliga season.

Another transfer window has led to another high-profile departure within the Eintracht frontline, this time Hugo Ekitike. The Frenchman netted 22 goals in 48 games across all competitions, which led to Liverpool signing him for what could be up to €95m. Frankfurt have moved to replace Ekitike, bringing in Jonathan Burkardt from Mainz and may add another striker before the transfer deadline.

Werder Bremen preview: Horst power

Werder Bremen are looking to build on their eighth-place finish secured last season under Ole Werner. With Werner now at RB Leipzig, Steffen Horst has made the move from SV Elversberg after seven seasons in charge at UrsapharmArena. Elversverg came so close to reaching the Bundesliga in Horst’s final year but lost to Heidenheim in the relegation play-off.

Only one player has currently signed permanently for Werder this summer for a cash fee, that being forward Samuel Mbangula from Juventus for €10m. Leeds Utd centre-back Max Wober has joined on loan, but Horst will no doubt be hoping for more incomings between now and the transfer window closing.

Eintracht Frankfurt team news: Burkardt ready to go

Striker Jonathan Burkardt is set to make his first start for Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga. However, the hosts will be without Ngankam and Skhiri, both of whom are injured.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Zetterer; Kristensen, Koch, Collins, Theate; Larsson, Chaibi; Doan, Uzun, Gotze; Burkardt

Unavailable: Ngankam (Injured), Kaua Santos (Fitness), Skhiri (Injured)

Questionable:

Werder Bremen team news: Up to five missing

It's hardly an ideal scenario for Werder Bremen with a number of players out through injury, including new signing Max Wober. Mitchell Weiser is perhaps the most notable name missing for the away side.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Backhaus; Malatini, Stark, Friedl, Agu; Lynen, Bittencourt; Njinmah, Schmid, Grull; Topp

Unavailable: Deman (Injured), Pieper (Injured), Stage (Injured), Weiser (Injured), Wober (Injured)

Questionable: Alvero (Illness)

Eintracht Frankfurt vs Werder Bremen prediction

As well as Werder Bremen played last season, it will be difficult for them to replicate that. Especially when considering that they haven’t dramatically improved her squad, not to mention having a new head coach in charge. Eintracht Frankfurt may have lost Ekitike, but have consistently proven that they are capable of responding to a key player departing the club and adapting as appropriate on the pitch.

Expect Eintracht to boss the majority of this encounter with them being at home and whilst there is perhaps a question mark regarding how potent they will prove to be going forward, the hosts boast enough high-level personnel to eventually break through Werder. Therefore, back this one to end in a home win.
