Following victory in the Champions League midweek, Eintracht Frankfurt aim to back this up against Union Berlin and get back to winning ways in the Bundesliga.

Eintracht Frankfurt preview: Turkish delight

Eintracht Frankfurt made a big statement in midweek with their exploits in the Champions League. Hosting Turkish giants Galatasaray in the opening round of league phase fixtures, Dino Toppmoller’s side blew their opponents away, winning 5-1 despite trailing early on. Both Can Uzun and Jonathan Burkardt were on the scoresheet, whilst Ansgar Knauff also found the net.

However, their last Bundesliga outing ended in defeat as Eintracht lost 3-1 away to Bayer Leverkusen. Set pieces proved to be their undoing with two Alejandro Grimaldo free kicks and a penalty sealing victory for Leverkusen. The first of those free-kicks went down as an own goal after hitting the post and ricocheting into the goal off the back of a diving Zetterer.

Union Berlin preview: Momentum low

Union Berlin started the new campaign so well with a 2-1 win over Stuttgart, but since then it’s been nothing but disappointment for Steffen Baumgart’s men. Back-to-back defeats against Borussia Dortmund and Hoffenheim have seen them plummet down the table, with the Hoffenheim loss particularly painful.

It’s now seven goals conceded across their last two Bundesliga fixtures, which hardly bodes well for Union when taking into account their opponents here, one of the strongest attacking teams in the German top flight.

Eintracht Frankfurt team news: Question mark over Gotze

Eintracht Frankfurt could be without Mario Gotze, with the experienced attacking midfielder facing a late fitness test. Both Rasmus Kristensen and Jessic Ngankam are ruled out with thigh injuries.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Santos; Collins, Koch, Theate, Brown; Skhiri, Chaibi; Doan, Uzun, Bahoya; Burkardt

Unavailable: Kristensen (thigh), Ngankam (thigh)

Questionable: Gotze (Injured)

Union Berlin team news: Suspension rules out Rothe

Union Berlin full-back Tom Rothe is banned after his sending off against Hoffenheim, whilst Stanley Nsoki and Livan Burcu both miss out through injury. Also doubtful with a knock is 19-year-old Andrik Markgraf.

Predicted XI (3-4-3): Ronnow; Doekhi, Querfeld, Leite; Trimmel, Khedira, Haberer, Skov; Burke, Ilic, Ansah

Unavailable: Burcu (Injured), Nsoki (Injured), Rothe (Suspended)

Questionable: Markgraf (Injured)

Eintracht Frankfurt vs Union Berlin prediction

Despite their slip-up against Bayer Leverkusen, Eintracht Frankfurt look the real deal this season and at home in particular, they will prove extremely tough opposition. The attacking verve imposed upon the squad by Dino Toppmoller makes them a hugely exciting team to watch on the pitch and Union Berlin will struggle to contain the hosts over the course of 90 minutes.

Expect Eintracht Frankfurt o dominate possession and with the players at Toppmoller’s disposal, creating chances shouldn’t be an issue. They are in fantastic form and in front of their own fans, any outcome other than victory for Frankfurt over an out of form Union Berlin would definitely be seen as a surprise.
