Diego Dedura is handed a wildcard for this event in Hamburg. This is his second ATP main draw match of the season, having lost in the first-round of the BMW Open in April. He won his first ever tour-level match in Munich last year, picking up a win after Denis Shapovalov was forced to retire. He last competed on the Challenger Tour in Zagreb, losing in the second-round. The 18-year-old is ranked outside of the top 250 in the world.
His first-round opponent is Frances Tiafoe. The American competed at the Italian Open, but suffered a surprising defeat to Andrea Pellegrino in the third-round after coming from a set down to beat Ignacio Buse in his opening match. This was Tiafoe’s first event in over a month on the tour, following his semi-final loss to Tommy Paul in Houston.
This should be a straight-forward win for Tiafoe as he looks ahead to Roland Garros, having reached the quarter-finals of that major last year.
