Diane Parry earned a big scalp in the first-round as she beat former Grand Slam finalist Leylah Fernandez 7-5 7-6. There were six trades of serve during the match but Parry kept her nerve during the most pressurised moments to take the victory and set up a match with Liudmila Samsonova.
Samsonova beat Linda Noskova 6-1 7-6 in the first-round. She made a fast start and managed to grab a late break in the second to seal victory. She’s aiming to win consecutive matches in a tournament for the first time since reaching the quarter-finals of Indian Wells in the middle of March.
She won’t have everything her own way against Parry, who will take confidence from her performance and win over Fernandez, but we expect Samsonova, who has not been in the best form of late, to win over three sets and reach the last eight of the competition.
