Dayana Yastremska made the most perfect start to her Madrid Open second-round match, taking the first set against Coco Gauff 6-0. Unfortunately for the Ukrainian, she was unable to maintain that level and fell to a three set defeat despite a late fightback in the final set.  Considering Gauff went on to win the title, it just goes to show how dangerous a player Yastremska can be at points but she needs to find a way to be more consistent.

Anastasia Potapova impressed last time out in Madrid, defeating Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng and Charleston Open finalist Sofia Kenin on her way to making the fourth-round where she lost to Marta Kostyuk. This was a step in the right direction for the Russian after retiring before her second-round match with Aryna Sabalenka in Stuttgart due to injury.

Yastremska leads the head-to-head 2-1 and 1-0 on clay, with that encounter being at this very event seven years ago, with the Ukrainian thrashing Potapova 6-1 6-0.  Their most recent matches took place earlier this year with Potapova winning in Brisbane and Yastremska coming out on top in Dubai.
