Darja Semenistaja enters the main draw as a lucky loser. She won her first match in qualifying but was then on the end of a defeat to Sinja Kraus in straight sets. The Latvian’s best result of the season was a quarter-final appearance at a WTA 125 event in Mumbai, which saw her win two matches and take the first set against Lilli Tagger, before losing the match in three.

She goes up against Elisabetta Cocciaretto. The Italian is ranked inside the top 50 and has won 14 of her 18 matches this season. She picked up a thigh injury which ruled her out of Indian Wells, but she is back for this event. Cocciaretto enjoyed a brilliant start to the season as she picked up her second career title in Hobart, before a run to the quarter-finals in Doha.

Cocciaretto has a 2-0 record against Semenistaja and beat her on the way to the title in Hobart earlier this year. She has not competed for over a month and might need to get up to speed, but she’s the heavy favourite here.
