Daria Kasatkina notched up a fine win in Strasbourg as she beat sixth seed Liudmila Samsonova in the first-round. An engrossing first set saw Samsonova go up a break on two occasions, with Kasatkina crucially breaking her opponent’s serve at 5-4 down. She would reel off two more games to take the lead and went on to win 7-5 6-3. Kasatkina already has a title this month, following success at La Bisbal d’Emporada.
She now faces Peyton Stearns. The American was largely untroubled in the first-round as she beat former world number three Maria Sakkari in straight sets. Stearns broke on five separate occasions and won the final five games as she claimed a 6-3 6-1 win.
The head-to-head is 4-2 in favour of Kasatkina, but it’s 1-1 on clay. Both players performed well in their first-round matches, and this should be a competitive meeting between the pair in the round-of-16.
