Daniil Medvedev’s resurgence was halted in Miami as he suffered a third-round defeat to Francisco Cerundolo. It’s still been an excellent start to the season for Medvedev, as he’s won two titles in Brisbane and Dubai, along with a run to the final of Indian Wells, which saw him put an end to Carlos Alcaraz’s unbeaten start to the season with a straight sets win in the semi-finals. He doesn’t have the greatest record here, but he did reach a semi-final seven years ago.
He received a bye in the first-round and now takes on Matteo Berrettini. The Italian advanced after his opponent Roberto Bautista Agut retired in the previous stage. Berrettini was leading 4-0 in the first set.
Medvedev has a 3-0 record in the head-to-head, and this will be their first meeting on clay. Berrettini’s strong first serve will not be nearly as effective here, and Medvedev should be able to grind his way through to the next round with minimal fuss.
