Daniel Altmaier got his first tour-level win of the season in the first-round of the Tiriac Open as he comfortably defeated Pedro Martinez in straight sets. The German raced ahead in the first set and maintained his level in the second, not losing serve throughout the match as he won 6-1 6-4 after one hour and 36 minutes. Altmaier began his season with eight straight defeats, but he did reach the final of the Naples Challenger last week and seems to have regained some confidence.
He now faces Dino Prizmic in the next stage of the tournament. The Croatian defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili in the first-round. He won 82% of his first serve points and six of the last seven games as he claimed a 6-4 6-2 victory. Prizmic managed to qualify for Indian Wells last month, reaching the second-round before retiring in his match against Arthur Fils.
Altmaier may have turned a corner, but it’s difficult to back him after a poor run of results to start the season.
