Daniel Altmaier made it through to the next round in Hamburg after a straight sets win over Rinky Hijikata. He broke early and opened up a 4-2 lead in the first set, only to be pegged back as Hijikata won two games on the spin. Nevertheless, the German would break again as Hijikata served to stay in the set. Two more breaks in the second were enough, as Altmaier won 7-5 6-2.
He now takes on second seed Ben Shelton. The American was pushed, but he managed to end a slight dip in form with a three set win over Marcos Giron. Shelton sealed the win in a deciding set tiebreak, claiming a 6-3 4-6 7-6 (3) victory. Shelton had suffered early exits in Madrid and Rome, and he’ll be hoping for a few more wins ahead of Roland Garros next week.
Altmaier is one win away from a third quarter-final appearance at this event, but Shelton is still a favourite to make it through. However, he will have to shorten points and hope his first serve is firing.
