THE LOWDOWN

BANGLADESH

Bangladesh’s 2023 Asia Cup campaign came to an end at the ‘Super Four’ stage as they were beaten by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, although they did gain a hard-fought victory over India, who in mitigation had rested key players with their place in the final already secure. Now the Tigers turn their attentions to this ODI series in preparation for the 50-over World Cup starting next month. Shakib Al Hasan, Taskin Ahmed and Mehidy Hasan have been rested, whilst opening batter Tamim Iqbal and all-round Mahmudullah return to the squad.

NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand ended their ODI series in England with a whimper, losing three matches on the bounce, all of which were sizeable defeats. Bangladesh perhaps represents a more winnable challenge, although the Black Caps have taken the opportunity to rest a number of players. Devon Conways, Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips all won’t feature, whilst an injury picked up by bowler Tim Southee in the final ODI against England rules him out on this series.

THE PREDICTION

This match being played in sub-continental conditions suits Bangladesh, who have spent the last month playing in both Sri Lanka and Pakistan during the 2023 Asia Cup. New Zealand meanwhile, are coming off the back of a long white-ball tour on the flat pitches with England with little in the way of spin-assistance and it may take them time to adapt to the pitches in Bangladesh. Therefore, consider backing the Tigers to draw first blood in Mirpur.

BETTING TIP: BANGLADESH TO WIN
