Corentin Moutet advanced to the next round in Monte-Carlo as he comfortably got past fellow countryman Alexandre Muller. Moutet thrashed Muller in Washington last year, and it was another dominant win for the 26-year-old as he wrapped up a 6-4 6-1 win after one hour and 21 minutes. Moutet had 11 break point opportunities during the match, converting five of them.
He now takes on three-time Grand Slam finalist Casper Ruud in round two. Ruud beat Alexei Popyrin in straight sets. They faced each other at this event last year, with Popyrin coming through with the victory, bur Ruud exacted revenge here as he he won 6-3 6-4.
It was a controlled display from the Norwegian in the first-round, and he will be looking to build some momentum ahead of the rest of the clay season, especially with his defence of the Madrid Open title in the coming weeks. Ruud is an excellent player on this surface and starts as a firm favourite against Moutet.
