Clara Tauson defeated Eva Lys to get through to the last eight in Seoul, but was then on the end of a comprehensive defeat to youngster Maya Joint. She has three defeats from her last four matches overall and will hope to get back on track during this Asian swing of the season. It’s still been a fine year for Tauson, who is up to her highest ranking of 12 in the world. She has also excelled on hard courts this season, with 21 wins from 31 matches and a title in Auckland at the start of the year. Her WTA 1000 record has been superb, with a final in Dubai backed up by a semi-final appearance in Montreal.
Zeynep Sonmez set up a meeting with Tauson in round two after thrashing Sijia Wei 6-2 6-0 in the first-round. The Turk conceded just one break point and wasn’t broken on serve, while she also won the last nine service games to win in one hour and two minutes.
Despite that win, Sonmez has struggled to make an impact on the WTA Tour this season, and we can’t see that changing against the powerful Tauson.
