Clara Tauson notched up just one win out of three matches at the Sunshine Double events last month. The Dane won her first encounter at Indian Wells, but her run was halted after a defeat to Talia Gibson in three sets. Another defeat then followed in Miami, with Tauson having to retire in the third set against Katie Boulter. Her best result of the campaign so far was a semi-final appearance at the Abu Dhabi Open.
She received a bye in the first-round and now faces Katerina Siniakova. The Czech got past Elvina Kalieva in straight sets. Kalieva, who qualified for the tournament, broke first in the match but Siniakova hit back in the next service game and never looked back, winning 6-3 6-4.
Siniakova leads the head-to-head 2-0 and 1-0 on clay. They faced each other in Doha earlier this season, with Siniakova cruising to a 6-4 6-1 victory. This is a tough match for Tauson to start her clay court season.
