Clara Tauson’s physical issues have continued on clay, as she was forced to retire from her opening match against Oleksandra Oliynykova in Rome. That was her first match since also having to retire against Katie Boulter in Miami six weeks earlier. She did produce some consistent results earlier in the season, as she progressed to the semi-finals of the Abu Dhabi Open and the last eight in Dubai, but her fitness is a clear concern.
She received a bye as the fourth seed and now faces Jaqueline Cristian. The Romanian got her campaign up and running with a dominant win over McCartney Kessler in the first-round. Cristian created 12 break point opportunities in total as she won 6-1 6-1 after an hour and 17 minutes.
The head-to-head is 3-3 between the pair. Tauson’s movement could be compromised if her shoulder injury persists, while Cristian is coming off a fine performance in round one. The latter is a safer bet to win.
