Caty McNally reached the second-round of the Miami Open after a straight sets win over Rebeka Masarova. The American controlled the first set but went a break down in the second, though recovered to win 6-2 7-5. This was her first main draw victory in Miami, having never got past the qualifying stages or the first-round in the past.
She now faces Xinyu Wang. The Chinese player is currently on a three-match losing run and did not win a set in either of those matches. She competed at Indian Wells but lost to Ajla Tomljanovic, picking up just four games in total. She does lead the head-to-head 1-0 after coming from a set down to beat McNally earlier this year in Auckland.
Wang has not enjoyed a great run since the Australian Open, but she is still the comfortably higher ranked player here and should be making it through to the next round of the competition.
