Caty McNally has four defeats from her last five matches, and the American has struggled for consistency during the opening months of the season. After losing in the first-round of Indian Wells to Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva, McNally decided to compete in Austin, but her fortunes did not change after a second-round defeat to Lanlana Taraudee.
Rebecca Masarova lost in the first stage of Indian Wells qualifying but fared better here, as she defeated Storm Hunter and Ella Seidel to enter the main draw. The Swiss player also performed well at the ATX Open, as she won four matches in a row to make the quarter-finals, despite also having to qualify. This included a fine victory over Xinyu Wang in straight sets.
McNally is the favourite and will look to finish points early with an aggressive style, but Masarova is likely to become a problem for her if she drags the rallies out. This could go to three sets.
