Casper Ruud failed to defend his title at the Madrid Open as he was on the end of a surprising straight sets loss to Alexander Blockx in the quarter-finals. Ruud was impressive on his way to getting there, as he comfortably defeated the Spanish duo of Jaume Munar and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, before saving match points to dramatically get past Stefanos Tsitsipas. Nevertheless, that loss saw him drop out of the world’s top 20 for the first time in five years.
He received a bye in round one and now takes on Zachary Svajda. The American ended a four-match losing run as he recovered from a poor start to beat Marco Trungelliti. Svajda was unable to win a single game in the first set, but he was not broken on serve after that as he held his nerve in the deciding set tiebreak to win 0-6 6-4 7-6 (4).
Ruud still impressed at times in Madrid, and this is likely to be a straight-forward match for the three-time Grand Slam finalist.
