Casper Ruud advanced to his fourth semi-final in Rome after a three set win over Karen Khachanov in a rain-interrupted match. The Norwegian made a fabulous start and took the first set with ease, but his momentum was halted as play was suspended for a few hours after a period of bad weather. Khachanov was the much better player straight after the restart, but Ruud reasserted his dominance in the decider to win 6-1 1-6 6-2. He is now back into the top 20 of the live rankings.
He faces Luciano Darderi. The Italian continued his best run at a Masters tournament with a three set win over Rafael Jodar. Darderi was pegged back after going an early break up, but he still led after the first set following a tiebreak. Jodar magnificently saved two match points in the second and forced a decider, but Darderi outlasted the youngster to win 7-6 (5) 5-7 6-0.
The Italian has been a superb player on this surface over the last year, with a number of titles, and he should be able to test Ruud.
