Casper Ruud advanced to the quarter-finals of the Italian Open for a fifth time as he comfortably got past Lorenzo Musetti. Ruud was largely unchallenged as he won 6-3 6-1. The Norwegian dropped out of the top 20 of the world rankings after failing to defend his Madrid Open title, but his results on clay over the past few weeks have been encouraging.
He now takes on Karen Khachanov. He reached the quarter-finals of a Masters 1000 event for the first time since making it through to the final of the Canadian Open last August as he defeated Dino Prizmic in straight sets. It had been a breakthrough event for Prizmic, who defeated Novak Djokovic in the second-round, but he was on the back foot from the start here as Khachanov won 6-1 7-6 (2).
Ruud leads the head-to-head 2-1 and 1-0 on clay. He’s been operating at a strong level so far in this event, and Khachanov will have to produce a brilliant performance if he is to get the better of the three-time Grand Slam finalist.
