Caroline Alves qualifies for the event as a lucky loser. In the second qualifying stage, she lost to Sada Nahimana despite taking the first set. The Brazilian is currently ranked 288 in the world and usually plays on the ITF Tour. She won a W35 event in Buenos Aires earlier in the year but will have her work cut out against Katie Volynets.
Volynets withdrew towards the end of the second set against Clara Tauson in the second-round of the Italian Open. The American was trailing 7-5 4-1. She had performed well in the tournament up to that point with three consecutive wins including qualifying. Volynets has competed in a raft of events over the past six weeks, with her best effort being a final appearance in a 150 event in Oeiras.
As long as Volynets is free of any fitness concerns, she should be making the next round with minimal fuss.
